Cummings.
A Vision That Became a Community
In 1938, James Cummings sold his successful pharmaceutical companies in Buffalo and Toronto and set out to find the perfect climate—one with four distinct seasons, mild winters, and refreshing summers. He sought a home close to a town with history yet secluded enough to enjoy peace and privacy.
That search led him to this beautiful corner of North Carolina, where he built his personal retreat—one that has since evolved into a welcoming community for those who, like him, value natural beauty, serenity, and an active lifestyle.
A Lasting Legacy
James Cummings called this land home for the last 20 years of his life, raising cattle and enjoying a quiet, meaningful life. Though he was known for his humility and down-to-earth nature, his generosity continues to shape the world today through the James H. Cummings Foundation.
Since its founding, the foundation has donated over $26 million to medical research, underprivileged children, and organizations serving the elderly and infirm. Local beneficiaries include Pardee Hospital, Park Ridge Hospital, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club of Hendersonville, Four Seasons Hospice, and the Council on Aging.
